WindSider: Building the next-generation wind energy development platform using AI and cloud-based technologies
New Fast Track to Innovation programme funded by the European Commission
24/03/2020 – In January 2020, 3E launched the development of a next-generation AI-powered wind data platform aiming to improve wind resource assessment. This new platform addresses the need for automated, low-cost and accurate wind resource data for planning bankable wind energy projects. This breakthrough tool will be developed through the WindSider project funded by the European Commission under the Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) programme.
As project coordinator and platform owner, 3E will combine the expertise of the consortium in artificial intelligence, cloud-computing technologies and Copernicus SENTINEL 2 satellite data into a cutting-edge platform tailored to the needs of the wind industry. 3E will also apply its know-how in wind resource modelling and AI to deliver advanced data modelling technology for shaping future standards in wind resource assessment.
The consortium consists of key players in the industry who took a major role in the Global Wind Atlas and New European Wind Atlas projects (Nazka Mapps, DTU Wind Energy), and of leading European ICT players (SingularLogic, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid).
Grégoire Leroy, Product Manager for 3E and WindSider, states: “Digital technologies, such as AI, cloud computing and big data are already embedded in many industries within the banking, automotive and health sectors. As these technologies have the potential to drastically improve the wind farm development process, it is time for wind resource assessment to embrace them. While reducing costs and efforts, WindSider will make use of all these technologies through an innovative platform shaped to the needs of the industry.” He further adds: “I am glad that the consortium’s efforts led to a winning proposal in such a competitive call as the FTI.”
